If you have seen our Summer 2010 campaign around town to educate the public on Randle Reef ...our "Cube"... you have come to right place.
Randle Reef is a problem from our past. Located in the industrial corner of the Harbour, it’s a blob of coal tar dumped in the water before the 1960s and prior to pollution laws. It is the most contaminated site in the Harbour and the worst Canadian site of its kind in the Great Lakes.
The Cube represents one of 630,000 cubic metres of severely toxic coal tar sludge found in Randle Reef in Hamilton Harbour. This is enough to fill Copps Coliseum three times!!!!
The preferred clean‐up strategy is an on site containment
facility that will cap the contaminated sediment in Randle
Reef. At $105 million, the cost is to be split among federal and
provincial governments, and local stakeholders. We need our local and federal governments to step up to the plate and take action. We have waited far too long for the remediation process to start!
